Usage of 是…的 (shì… de)
Meaning: Used to spotlight when, where, or how something happened.
Context: Only for events that have already taken place. The speaker takes the event as known and draws attention to one detail of it.
Structure:
Subject + 是 + (time / place / manner) + Verb + 的
Note: 是 and 的 are a pair — the detail you want to stress sits between them. Drop the 的 and the emphasis disappears.
- • 我们是在中文课认识的。
(It was in Chinese class that we met. / From Text) - • 我是昨天来的。
(It was yesterday that I came.) - • 他是坐车去学校的。
(He went to school by bus.)
Usage of 也 (yě)
Meaning: Also / too.
Context: Adds a second thing that matches the first — another action, another quality, another situation.
Structure:
Subject + 也 + Verb / Adjective
Note: 也 always stands in front of the verb or adjective. It can never be tacked onto the end of a sentence the way English “too” can.
- • 小王很友好,也很爱笑。
(Xiao Wang is very friendly, and he laughs easily too. / From Text) - • 我喜欢喝咖啡,也喜欢喝茶。
(I like coffee, and I like tea too.) - • 他是我的朋友,也是我的同学。
(He is my friend, and my classmate as well.)
