Usage of 比 (bǐ)
Meaning: Than — used to compare two people or things.
Context: Sets two things side by side and says which one has more of a quality.
Structure:
A + 比 + B + Adjective
Note: never put 很 in front of the adjective in a 比 sentence — 他比我很高 is wrong. Just 他比我高.
- • 我的朋友比我帅。
(My friend is better looking than me. / From Text) - • 他比我高。
(He is taller than me.) - • 这个手机比那个贵。
(This phone is more expensive than that one.)
Usage of 可是 / 但是 (kě shì / dàn shì)
Meaning: But / however.
Context: Marks a contrast, or a result the listener would not expect from the first half of the sentence.
Structure:
Sentence A,可是 / 但是 + Sentence B
Note: both go at the start of the second clause, never at the end of the first. 可是 sounds a shade more conversational; 但是 is a shade more neutral.
- • 我喜欢一个女生,可是我的好朋友也喜欢她。
(I like a girl, but my best friend likes her too. / From Text) - • 我想去,可是我很忙。
(I want to go, but I am very busy.) - • 他很累,但是还在工作。
(He is very tired, but he is still working.)
