Usage of 对 (duì)
Meaning: Toward / to / with regard to.
Context: Points at the person or thing an attitude, feeling, or way of treating someone is directed at.
Structure:
A + 对 + B + Adjective / Verb Phrase
Note: 对 and its target come before the adjective, not after it. 他很好对我 is wrong.
- • 他对我很好。
(He is very good to me. / From Text) - • 老师对学生很严格。
(The teacher is strict with the students.) - • 我对中文很有兴趣。
(I am very interested in Chinese.)
Usage of 的时候 (de shí hou)
Meaning: When… / at the time of…
Context: Sets up the time frame for the main action — what is going on when something else happens.
Structure:
Verb Phrase + 的时候，Main Clause
Note: unlike English “when”, 的时候 comes at the end of the time clause, never at its start.
- • 他工作的时候很认真。
(When he is working he is very focused. / From Text) - • 我学习的时候喜欢听音乐。
(When I study I like listening to music.) - • 下雨的时候，我在家。
(When it rains, I stay at home.)
