Usage of 离 (lí)
Meaning: Away from / From (distance).
Context: Used to state how far or how near one place is from another. It can also measure distance in time, such as how long until a holiday.
Structure:
Note: Use 离 for distance between two points. Don’t use 从 here — 从 marks a starting point of movement, not a gap.
- • 大卫家离机场很远。
(David’s house is far away from the airport. / From Text) - • 我的学校离家很近。
(My school is very close to home.) - • 北京离上海不太远。
(Beijing is not too far from Shanghai.)
Usage of 要……了 (yào…le)
Meaning: About to / Going to happen soon.
Context: Signals that an action or a change is coming in the near future. Often used for departures, weather changes, and anything on the point of starting.
Structure:
Note: The 了 here does not mean past tense. It marks a change of state — from “not yet” to “about to”.
- • 下个星期，他要去中国了。
(Next week, he is going to China. / From Text) - • 飞机要起飞了。
(The plane is about to take off.) - • 天要黑了，我们回家吧。
(It’s about to get dark, let’s go home.)
